Cambodia
Cambodia conjures different thoughts in different people. Some think of the amazing temples of Angkor Wat. Others remember the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. Some remember the secret bombings by the US that bred the Khmer Rouge.
Today children are once again going to school. Tourists from Japan, Korea and the West are coming in large numbers. They discover the warmth and friendliness of the Khmer. They spend a lot of money. Many Cambodians are looking to the future with a sense of hope but not all. Corruption is rampant, and the trafficking of children, prostitution, HIV/AIDS take its toll. People still fall victims to landmines. Much of the tourism revenue ends up in the pockets of the few and already rich.

Why volunteer in Cambodia?
40% of the country’s population is under the age of 15! Almost all of the country’s qualified teachers and doctors were executed by the Khmer Rouge. Landmines have left a large number of adults and children maimed and disabled for life if not killed. Children have been orphaned due to AIDS. This leaves a huge void in the field of education, child and health care and Cambodia is in great need of overseas volunteers.
